Berkeley Councilmember Ben Bartlett’s Statement On The Berkeley City Council’s Police Defund Actions Councilmember Bartlett reports: On Tuesday, June 30th, 2020, the Berkeley City Council approved the Audit of Police Call and Response Data Analysis. Introduced by Councilmember Ben Bartlett, the approval of the audit is part 1 of the Safety for All: George Floyd Community Safety Act. The police audit legislation requires the City Auditor to conduct a study by collecting and analyzing Berkeley Police Department activities. Areas of the audit includes police calls and responses, traffic stops and responses, and the number of complaints against an officer as well as the nature of the claim. Conducting a data-driven analysis of the Berkeley Police Department is crucial. Once data is gathered, the City will be able to move forwards with data-driven policies that can effectively reallocate police funding. The purpose of the audit is to put out findings and recommendations that will find initiatives and reforms to implement to reduce the footprint of the police department and limit the police’s response to violent and criminal service calls. Stay tuned.
