Rebecca Kaplan Oakland Councilmember Presents Ideas To Generate Budget Revenue - On Twitter Oakland City Council President Rebecca Kaplan presented this text on Twitter about 35 minutes ago to this point: Closing the budget gap requires admitting the biggest cause of it: un-budgeted police over-spending. And pushing implementation of solutions, including ones Council has already passed; requirements to track and control over-spending; move special events etc out of police dept. And we do need revenue. Some fought putting on ballot our proposal to have billionaire corporations like Uber and Lyft remit taxes. Yet TNC tax passed in Berkeley, & big corp$ failed in local races. We must close tax loopholes. And to revise TOT tax, deal with medium-term uses. Make it easier to add uses like housing/ADUs, & to open local businesses. Revise zoning to expand use for vacant spaces, and expansion of housing and more on transit corridors. Streamline permitting, add hours of operation, add pre-approved templates for ADUs and small projects. Oakland Councilmember Kaplan Must Explain Economic Impact Of Ideas The problem here is that there's zero staff analysis called for to determine how many businesses will leave Oakland or small businesses closed with these tax loopholes. This is really just sloppy thinking that is not sensitive to the times we live in. Rebecca, do better. Oakland do better. Stay tuned.
