Oakland Lake Merritt ATV Riders Noise Alarms Neighbors Who Call For Police Investigation - Video

Oakland Lake Merritt ATV Riders Noise Alarms Neighbors Who Call For Police Investigation This week, a group of people with all terrain vehicles decided to ride on the lawn of the Lake Merritt Park area just across Bellevue Avenue, from where The Battery SF is proposed to be at the Bellevue Club. The noise produced by the ATVs is unmistakably loud. Certainly louder than anything or person I've witnessed at Lake Merritt. On Twitter, an exchange took place where a profile called "Fix Oakland Now" - no real name - asked Can you please enforce ANY laws at Lake Merritt? I’m regularly told by OPD that Oakland has told OPD not to enforce any laws at the lake… This is happening now (as it does every day). Oakland Councilmember Carol Fife, seemingly not believing the image at first, asked "Is this a recent video". The response by Fix Oakland Now was "Yes, this unfortunately happens literally every single day. That particular video was from yesterday. Same people ride dirtbikes and ATVs all over the park nearly hitting people when they fall off their bikes. They drive against one-way traffic nearly causing accidents too." Then Fife asked "Does this happen at the same time every day?" Another Twitter profile Rahul wrote: "This happens quite often along the lake. They ride the protected bike lane too. While it’s fun to watch, it’s a little scary when they zoom past kiddos. Expect it becoming more of a thing as the weather gets better". Another Twitter profile "hola soy matt y tu" wrote: The late night parties on the southern end of Lakeshore Ave have also gotten out of control. Is it unreasonable to ask people to wrap up their parties by midnight? There shouldn’t be booming bass, drunk arguments, fireworks, and gunshots at 2am when your kids are trying to sleep. Personally, I can't ever remember a time when ATVs were permitted to ride on the grass along Lake Merritt. Indeed, I can't find a place in the Oakland Municipal Code where ATV's are specifically prohibited. And there's a reason for that: there's never been a situation calling for such regulations. Indeed, it's just this year that I can find any news account of problems with ATVs in Oakland. But, I did. Here's the entry from CBS KPIX January 19th, 2021: "Oakland police said the sideshows began around noon with more than 300 All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and dirt bikes driving recklessly throughout Oakland. According to the CHP, officers initially responded just after 5 p.m. for a report of a sideshow involving as many as 15 dirt bikes heading toward the Bay Bridge. When CHP patrol cars encountered the bikes on the bridge’s eastbound lanes, the riders allegedly turned around and began heading in the wrong direction. The riders then exited at the Sterling Street and Fourth Street off-ramps, traversed downtown San Francisco and re-entered the bridge the wrong way on the Fremont Street on-ramp, heading east on the upper deck of the westbound Bay Bridge." So, this is a new problem. How Oakland will handle it is the next question. And is Oakland District Three Councilmember Carol Fife supportive of the ATV riders? It seemed like she was skeptical of the complaints. As far as I'm concerned, as a Lake Merritt dweller, those ATVs are too damn noisy and should not be part of the neighborhood, pure and simple. The noise impacts the bird sanctuary on top of being a total assault on my ears. There's a lot of noise I like, music, etc - but the roar of a bike motor is not something I enjoy. Let them go to a race track. Maybe we should make one for them. I think so. Stay tuned.
