John Sasaki OUSD Media Rep Says Oakland School District Has COVID-19 Plan - Really - Video

John Sasaki OUSD Media Rep Says Oakland School District Has COVID-19 Plan - Really Got a testy email from John Sasaki of the Oakland Unified School District, who seems rather chafed in the wake of the total disaster that was last week's OUSD Board Meeting. He wrote: Hey Zennie, I want to check in about your post in which you said two things that are completely inaccurate. 1) You referred to "the school district’s lax COVID-19 policy" which is utter nonsense. There is nothing "lax" about it as we are following - even exceeding - all the guidance from the county and the state. 2) Likewise, you quoted someone saying, "this school district’s failure to provide any plan for a safe in-person opening of Oakland’s public schools in 2020-21" which is, again, patently false. If we are following all the guidance from the county and state, how could we not have a plan? I'm not not going to argue with what members of the public are saying, but I don't think you should be taking all of it at face value and publishing it like you did. Thanks for your consideration. John What John is referring to is Oakland News Now's posts on kids not wearing masks on the way to school, and the awful OUSD Board Meeting. That was where an understandably angry parent named Missy Cross pretty much up-ended the proceedings, and for good reason: the Oakland Unified School District is not testing students for COVID-19. In other words, from the standpoint of what really matters, and that's if students have COVID, guess what? OUSD has no way of knowing on its own. If I type OUSD COVID-19 Plan in Google , I do not get a plan, but I get this page: https://ift.tt/3kdNHPZ ' The page is not a plan at all, but a place to tell me that students must wear masks, and that they have air ventilation systems. The COVID testing is does by you, not OUSD. They say so. You have to go and get one done. That's not a plan for students. It's more like "in case of emergency, you go and get help". So, if someone's not tested, it's their fault, not OUSD's. Bad stuff. What this live stream is about is what John wrote. I called John and texted John, and offered him the chance to come on and state OUSD's case. He seems to think there's only one set of "facts" but in point of fact what "plan" OUSD has is a matter of opinion. And in my view OUSD does not have a plan, and does not appears to want to fashion a plan to make parents happy. That's the worst news of all. I also invited Mike Hutchinson, who figures prominently in the video as a board member, on. Mike tried to separate himself from the rest of the OUSD Board, which is a continuation of what got him on the board to start with. But, the image of two black male board members yelling at each other, and a black woman leader of OUSD ignoring Ms. Cross, is hard to stomach. Video is news. If we had smartphones in the 50s, racism would have been stomped out much earlier. Now, journalism's job seems to be to dampen the impact of video. Think about it. In other words, journalism protects racist institutions. Stay tuned.
