OUSD Board’s Mike Hutchinson Blasts Oakland School Leaders, Calls For COVID Testing On Site Mike wrote this email: OUSD has reopened and there are issues, due to a lack of preparation and planning, that need to be immediately addressed. I have been trying to move things behind the scenes but I have been unsuccessful. I have asked all of my fellow school board directors to get involved and so far they have been completely unresponsive. The most immediate need is weekly Covid testing to be offered at every school site. Also families are being told that they will lose their school placement if they opt for distance learning, this needs to change so our students and families are truly given an option. There is much work to be done when if comes to safety protocols and having a robust and accessible distance learning program but the school board has abdicated their, our responsibility. Because of these unsafe and unequitable situations I will be introducing 2 resolutions at today’s s school board meeting and although there is no vote scheduled, we can and must demand immediate action. I need your help to provide weekly Covid testing at every OUSD school and to ensure that families that opt for distance learning have to right to return to their school when they return to in person learning. So far NONE of the other school board directors NOR the Superintendent have supported my resolutions. Please join me in demanding that OUSD immediately implement weekly school site Covid testing and guarantee that students in distance learning have the right to return to their school placement.
